Perry's initial attempts to be a star in the mainstream were unsuccessful. She was signed by two different record companies, but was subsequently dropped prior to any of the songs had even been made available for release. Capitol Records however released Perry's EP Ur So Gay in 2007. The album's title track was a cheerful and flippant song that attracted modest public attention. "I Didn't Kiss a Girl was a more assertive ode sexism backed with a hard edged electro-pop rhythm. It quickly caused controversy as some critics derided it for promoting same-sex relations while others claimed that the sexually explicit scene that it depicted was a harbinger for men's fantasies about female sexuality. I Kissed a Girl became an international number-one single due to the combination of titillation with a polished melody. It was also instrumental in driving sales for her album from 2008, the album One of the Boys. Hot N Cold, Perry's lively and sharply-tongued album that included its second top-selling single, was a hit. The album that Perry composed herself sold more than three million copies.
